Obituary for Amanda Armstrong Swarens

Amanda Ayers Armstrong Swarens, age 90, was born on January 10, 1926 in Ewing, Virginia. Her parents were Dan and Mattie Ayres. She is preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

When she was young, she and her family moved to Fredericksburg, Indiana where they settled. Amanda graduated from Hardinsburg High School. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, Ray Armstrong returned home to Fredericksburg where he married a pretty girl from up the road, Amanda, on May 15, 1946.

Ray and Amanda raised their children, Ken Armstrong, JoAnn Armstrong Richardson and Sue Armstrong Hawkins on the family farm in Fredericksburg. Ray and Amanda spent their years together on the farm, growing crops, working hayfields and running a dairy. During these years their family continued to grow as the children grew older. The eldest, Kenneth Armstrong, resides on the family farm with his wife, LuAnn. Ken is the father of Scott Armstrong (Wimberley, TX), Todd Armstrong (Fredericksburg, IN) and Amy Armstrong Day (Abilene, TX). JoAnn married Rick Richardson. They live in Salem where they raised their children, Angie Richardson Motsinger and Jamie Richardson, both of Salem. Sue married John Hawkins. She and John raised their daughter, Katie Hawkins Harmon across the road from the family farm. Katie now resides in Vail Valley, Colorado.

In 1985, Ray passed suddenly. Amanda continued to reside on the farm. On April 15, 1989, Amanda remarried to Merrill Swarens of Ramsey, Indiana. Amanda loved her step children, Norman (Roxanne) Swarens and Jerry (Ann) Swarens of Ramsey, IN.

Amanda was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church and served as the Secretary of the Horner’s Chapel Cemetery Board for 40 years. Amanda adored her 6 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren.

Amanda passed surrounded by family on March 17th at Salem Crossing. Visitation and funeral will be at Swarens Funeral Home, 1405 Hwy 64 NW, Ramsey, IN on Monday from 2 – 8 P.M. and prior to the service on Tuesday from 9 – 11 A.M. Service will begin at 11 with interment following at Horner’s Chapel Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Horner’s Chapel Cemetery Association c/o Sue Hawkins, 3224 W. Mt.
