Obituary for Billy M. Fouts

Bill M. Fouts, 97, of Crandall, died the morning of Friday, the 13th of September.

Born May 7, 1922, in Byrneville, Indiana, he was the son of Oba Dyer Fouts and Agnes Wiseman and stepson of John M. Wiseman.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Herbert Franklin Fouts, Otis Randall Fouts, and Corwin Everett Fouts; sisters, Bonnie Jean Sturgeon, and Helene Marie Byrne; stepbrothers, Albert Lee Wiseman, Marion Lloyd Wiseman, John “Wilson” Wiseman; and four stepsisters, Blanche Koral Pinaire, Aida Elizabeth Raake, Odessa M. Utz, and Naomi Ruth Mack.

He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years Emma Jean Fouts and two sons; Leland Fouts, and Larry Bill Fouts.

He is survived by a daughter, Sherry Davis of Crandall; a son, Dallas Fouts of Milltown; six grandchildren and their spouses: Aaron Fouts of Hayden, Idaho; Angeline Fouts Delgado and Ralph Delgado of San Diego, California; Alicia and James Green of Perris, California; Penny Padgett of Jeffersonville, Indiana; Crista Davis of Crandall, Indiana; and Lacy and Joseph Phillips of Jeffersonville, Indiana. He is survived by nine great grandchildren: Eliana Green, Prince Josiah Green, Noah Padgett, Alaina Padgett, Payton Delgado, Dagny Delgado, Dominic Delgado, Faylyn Minzenberger, and Collin Phillips.

Bill served in the US Navy aboard the USS Ringness in the Pacific during WWII as a Gunner’s Mate and was involved in the at-sea rescue operation after the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the worst Naval disaster in US history. He told many stories about the Ringness’ passage through the Panama Canal, anchoring alongside the USS Constitution tall ship in Boston, Massachusetts during sea trials, life aboard the ship, and was featured in a documentary and book about the USS Indianapolis disaster.

Bill worked as a driver for Martin’s Hatchery for 20 years and was later a long-haul truck driver for Kentucky Transfer and Smith Transport. He was a lifelong member of the New Albany Seventh Day Adventist Church, and his hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, and reading.

Visitation will be held at Swarens Funeral Home, 1405 Hwy 64 NW, Ramsey, Indiana from 2-8 pm on Wednesday, September 18th and 10am-1pm on Thursday, September 19th. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 19th at 1pm at Swarens Funeral Home with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.
